Cass Tech Harp and Vocal Ensemble
Harp and Vocal
The Cass Technical High School Harp and Vocal Ensemble has a rich history that dates back to its founding in 1926. Established as a concert group that aims to provide high-quality musical education and performance experiences, the ensemble has become a cornerstone of the school’s artistic community.
Under the remarkable leadership of Velma Froude, who directed the ensemble for an impressive 43 years, it flourished into a prestigious group renowned for its exceptional musicianship and captivating performances. Velma’s dedication and vision allowed the ensemble to gain local, national, and international acclaim, showcasing its talent across diverse stages. Alumni of the ensemble have pursued successful careers in music, performing worldwide and continuing the legacy of excellence fostered at Cass Tech.
Following Velma Froude’s departure, Mrs. Patricia Terry Ross, an esteemed former student of the program, took the helm from 1976 to 2007. Her leadership further enriched the ensemble’s standing and drew new generations of musicians. In 2007, Ms. Lydia Cleaver, another proud alumna of the Harp and Vocal program, became the director, bringing a fresh perspective while honoring the ensemble's storied past.
The Harp and Vocal Ensemble is highly selective, operating as an auditioned group that attracts talented musicians from the student body. Daily rehearsals challenge members to refine their skills and push the boundaries of their artistry, ensuring that they are well-prepared for performances. The ensemble remains in high demand, underscoring its significance within the school's cultural fabric.
In 2016, the Cass Technical High School Harp and Vocal Ensemble celebrated a monumental milestone—its 91st anniversary. This event not only marked nearly a century of musical tradition but also highlighted the ensemble's enduring impact on the lives of countless students and the broader community it serves.

Harp Ensemble
The Harp Ensemble was established around the same time as the Harp and Vocal group, contributing to a rich tapestry of musical collaboration within the school. This elite ensemble typically features five of the most accomplished harpists, carefully selected for their exceptional talent and dedication to the instrument. Each member benefits from personalized instruction under the expert tutelage of Lydia Cleaver, a distinguished harpist known for her nurturing teaching style.
The lessons focus on developing advanced performance skills and mastering the intricate techniques intrinsic to playing the harp. The curriculum is grounded in the esteemed Carlos Salzedo Method, which emphasizes a holistic approach to harp playing, blending technical proficiency with emotional depth and artistic expression. Through this comprehensive training, the harpists refine their abilities to convey complex musical narratives, ensuring they are well-prepared to showcase their talents in solo and ensemble performances. The result is a dynamic and harmonious group that captivates audiences with their skillful artistry and deep passion for music.
